Things you should know about Dragon Medical Solutions
Hello. We've written this article about the new Dragon Medical Practice Edition, Dragon Medical 11 and Dragon Medical Upgrades for our return customers and new customers alike. Hopefully, it will help you decipher the range of products available today. A new version of Dragon Medical was introduced on 8/17/2011. While the technology continues to get better, it is also changing. We have basic product information below this article but we thought it was important to teach you about the current state of the technology. We'll be having full reviews in our Speech Technology State of the Art article which should make it's way online towards the end of September 2011. Join our list In the meantime, read and learn about Dragon Medical Practice Edition and Dragon Medical 11. THE DRAGON MEDICAL STORY What is Dragon Medical? How many versions exist? Where is Dragon Medical 11? Should I upgrade? Can it actually help my medical practice? Can Dragon work in the background? First, a little history is in order, so you understand the technology and available products. We'll refrain from exact dates. Many years ago, there was no Dragon Naturally Speaking Medical. There was only Dragon Naturally Speaking. Fastest and most accurate voice recognition software in town boasting over 90% accuracy right at version 1. As years have gone by, vocabularies and language models were built by developers and resellers for increased out of box accuracy, especially for medical and legal dictation. More years went by and Dragon Naturally Speaking matured with higher accuracy, vocabulary tools and a host of other features. Since special vocabularies always resulted in higher accuracy, the Dragon Medical Edition was born. Dragon Medical was released with a generic language model. A short definition of a language model is a vocabulary with statistical information. We'll simply refer to this as a vocabulary going forward. This vocabulary was good but not great for every medical specialty. We found that using Dragon's built in vocabulary tools along with a few tweaks, we were still able to get higher accuracy right from the start. Developers moved on and started to develop EMR systems while resellers (VARs) continued to work with Dragon Naturally Speaking and Physicians. Through a few more years of transitions, software breakthroughs, computer hardware breakthroughs and a few mergers and acquisitions, this brings us up to the year 2008. There were many changes in 2008. Dragon Medical was smarter. Introduced accent support and even more fine tuned vocabularies. There were some unwelcome changes. Not to Dragon Medical. There were limits imposed on the lower editions of Dragon Naturally Speaking being used for medical dictation. Limits imposed included no ability to directly dictate into EMRs, and now, the loss of vocabulary tools of which are key to 99% accuracy. Remember, these limits were only imposed to non Dragon Medical software. Many were upset. We support this change and we'll tell you why. While Dragon Naturally Speaking was doing well for some, it was not working well for others. These users would express their dissatisfaction with the software. The problem, however was that they weren't using the right software for the job or they didn't know how to use the tools in order to make the Dragon perform well. Since many of these purchases were made at local stores and big discount Internet stores, end users truly had no help. Call Centers and store clerks do not know Dragon like a VAR does and many times, these non-VAR outlets give vague or incorrect advice. Some succeeded, many also failed and wouldn't give Dragon another look for many years. Even today, there are users who try the low end editions and results are mixed but eventually, most non-medical software is shelved. Some state, after a lot of work, the dictation was pretty good. Medical dictation should never be pretty good. It should be excellent at all times. Therefore, this change, while forcing many medical professionals to pay more, the result is there are far more happier users getting higher accuracy, and far more success across the planet. Dragon Medical is now a mature product with almost 60 medical vocabularies available. While many users can get close to 99% right out of the box, some still do not. Vocabulary building, language model tools and good hardware, i.e. computer and microphone continue to raise accuracy points! While this is true, many users don't even know these tools exist, or rarely use them or are unwilling to spend a few hundred dollars on high end microphones. The balancing act continues. Dragon Medical is currently going through a transition. With the big rush for EMR/EHR implementation and the federal funds available for upgrading your practice, many practices are getting on board to find that they are actually slowed down! Physicians are forced to become data entry operators and are now in front of the computer instead of in front of the patient. This isn't always true and some can handle this better than others. Introducing the key component that can ease the pain. Dragon Naturally Speaking Medical. Direct dictation with up to 99% accuracy is awesome and saves time and money! The transition: In 2011, there are 3 different versions of Dragon Medical. Dragon Medical 10.1 Dragon Medical 10 was released in 2008 and was released in 2 editions. Dragon Medical Small Practice Edition and Dragon These two products were different in that the Dragon Medical (full) Edition had features for enterprise computing. Dragon Medical (full) also had a few more features such as having stop fields (like in each section in a SOAP note) and an interface for controlling medical acronyms. Today, we now have the next version of Dragon Medical which is called the Dragon Medical Practice Edition. Everyone expected the product to be called Dragon Medical 11 as it is called in other countries and as every other Windows version of Dragon Naturally Speaking. In the USA, however, the entire medical field is evolving and as such, so is Dragon Naturally Speaking Medical. The new Dragon Medical Practice Edition is basically the 11.0 version of Dragon Medical 10. Dragon Medical Practice Edition is more powerful than both Dragon Medical 10 (or 10.1) full and 10.1 Small Practice Edition. Dragon Medical Practice Edition has all the features Dragon Medical (full) 10.1 has. Dragon Medical Practice Edition increases accuracy over Dragon Medical 10.1, introduces multi-core / thread CPU support, a new accent support for Physicians with accents and uses the Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 speech recognition engine. There are even more features but we'll have to wait until we receive gold copies and a little bit of time for a full review. Dragon Medical Practice Edition will start shipping most likely mid September. Have Dragon? Should you upgrade? Dragon Medical Practice Edition (PE) is not for every medical professional. Dragon Medical PE is for practices of under 25 Physicians. Reason for this is, larger practices generally excercise enterprise computing. IT assets are usually also already in place. This is true of Hospitals, large clinics and other large institutions. Using these IT assets (i.e. a few servers, managed packet prioritization, domain control with user and group policies, etc..) can allow for better integration, security and management at the enteprise level. Therefore, Dragon Medical PE is only available to organizations of less than 25 Physicians while other enterprise solutions become available through Nuance direct. More to come. All other users should upgrade. Increasing accuracy even if by 1% - 2% is worth $500. If you have an accent, you may get even more gains in accuracy. Also, don't discount a good microphone. A good microphone is absolutely key for high accuracy in addition to make you faster if you get a microphone with push buttons. In general, the best microphones are rated by Dragons and our QMN indicators when purchasing microphones on our site indicate best use for Quiet, Moderately Noisy and Noisy environments. All in all, the goal is 99.9% accuracy regardless of which Dragon Medical you have. Dragon Medical PE now boasts a 15% accuracy increase. So, today if you are getting 95% accuracy with Dragon Medical, the upgrade alone should bring you closer to 97%. The next few points of accuracy will depend on your hardware (microphone and computer system) as well as your dictation habits. Every Physician with Dragon Medical should get trained by an authorized dealer with true field experience to peak efficiency and productivity. Where is medical dictation going? Things are about to get interesting. With a new national healthcare system coming online soon, medical offices are expected to be swamped. That's both a good and bad thing. How can Physicians see more patients while having to do all this data entry? In order for Physicians to handle the volume, we need to make them .. make you faster! That's why we sell other solutions to work with Dragon Medical, such as transcription systems, in case you need to enlist the staff to help with the dictation / transcription / data entry. Major manufacturers such as Philips are helping the cause by creating dictation and transcription software and hardware that work specifically with Dragon Medical and the ability to create hybrid dictation systems. Now, your secretary can edit your dictation with ease if you choose to work this way and you can do it with a recorder, with a microphone or with a Smartphone. You may not need all of this. If all works well, dictation directly to the patient record is achievable if that's what you want. What about the cloud? What is the Cloud? Cloud computing is basically Internet computing. Your computer programs are run by a system on the Internet. This has great flexibility and many organizations are going online. But, what if the cloud went offline? Dragon Medical Practice Edition is not cloud computing and therefore, this will never be an issue. Even if your EMR is Cloud based, if it goes down, you can dictate the right into Dragon Pad and print your dictation. Cloud computing is just coming into fruition and we'll have to see how this all pans out. Is Dragon Medical enough? We've been providing voice recognition to the medical community for over 10 years. One thing is certain. One size does not fit all. One office is "ready to go" buying slate computers, Bluetooth headsets, EMR and training. Others have old EMR systems and not wanting to upgrade. Others are not ready to jump to EMR use and are not interested in federal funds. Others wants office staff to handle the transcription and never want to look at a computer. Then there are "dictation practices". Some Physicians want to dictate entire narratives, some want to use templates, some hybrids and the list goes on. Some have no idea and we develop the workflow as we train. Regardless of which category you fall in, Dragon Medical is and should be in the middle somewhere.
